FAQ - Design and Construction

How wide is the proposed right of way?
The right of way is expected to range in width from 200 to 225 feet.
How tall and wide would the towers be?
While project design has not begun, PGE anticipates using a variety of structures, depending on location, terrain and other factors. Single-circuit towers, which generally range from 130-160 feet, are proposed from the Coyote Springs Plant to the Boardman Plant. Double-circuit towers, which generally range from 150-190 feet, are proposed for the majority of the remainder of the line, from the Boardman Plant to Salem. Tower widths could range from 30 to 50 feet. PGE’s current project design estimates about five towers per mile.
Why can’t high-volume transmission lines be placed underground?
High-voltage underground transmission is approximately 10 times more expensive than overhead transmission, and has extensive environmental impacts. In addition, outage repair is more difficult, making outages longer in duration.
